Subject: [nhhn-can] Wellesley backgrounder: New survey confirms urbanites
favour housing as solution to homelessness
Growing homelessness is a high priority for a majority of people living in
seven of Canada’s larger cities.
Affordable housing is the best way to end homelessness.
Well over one-third of urbanites say that governments are doing a poor or
very poor job dealing with homelessness, while less than one-quarter say
that politicians are doing a good or very good job.
Those are three of the key results from the Canada West Foundation, a
Calgary-based policy institute, which recently surveyed the residents of
Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Toronto on
“urban social challenges”.
>From the May 25, 2007, press release announcing the release of the survey:
“The Canada West Foundation today released a public opinion survey which
shows that the majority of urbanites in western Canada and Toronto rate
reducing homelessness as a high priority. The most popular ways to address
homelessness, according to the survey's respondents, are increased
affordable housing and increased programs and services for homeless people
rather than more shelter beds.”
