WOMEN'S HOUSING TAKEOVER
TORONTO
JUNE 3RD, 2007
CAWTHRA PARK (JUST NORTH OF 519 CHURCH)
12 NOON RALLY
1PM- MARCH
Led by women, trans people and our kids
ALL WELCOME
The Women Against Poverty Collective aims to bridge anti-poverty and
anti-violence organizing in Toronto so that both better speak to poor
women's daily struggles to get by. 1 in 7 women in Canada is living in
poverty- these women are most likely to be women of colour, Indigenous
women, young moms, women with disabilities and transwomen. Half of us are
survivors of physical and/or sexual violence. Poverty brings violence into
our lives and holds us back from freeing ourselves from it. 2/3 of women
who are in shelters go back to abusive situations because Welfare rates are
so low we cannot feed ourselves or our kids independently.
On June 3rd we are planning to come together to create our own housing.
Housing that is controlled by us so that it is safe and accessible. This
means taking an abandoned building and turning it into safe and affordable
community spaces where women, transfolks and our kids can live. We will
also organize a tent city that will surround the building to create a safe
barrier and to keep us visible.
As part of the housing takeover, the Women Against Poverty Collective
demands the following:
- That the Federal government adopt Right to Housing legislation.
- That welfare and ODSP rates by raised by 40% immediately and be
indexed thereafter to inflation rates.
- That all levels of government develop a Canada-wide housing policy
that has timelines, clear number of units to be build and accountability
components built in.
- That women should have access to universal safe and affordable
childcare.
- That violence against women should be understood as an equality
rights issue.
- That all homeless women be given highest priority status on the list
for affordable housing.
