MEDIA RELEASE November 15, 2007

Mary-Martha Hale presented with the Defender of Public Good Award in Ottawa!

Mary-Martha Hale, Chair of the Alliance to End Homelessness in Ottawa and
Executive Director of Anglican Social Services - Centre 454, was honoured
with the 2007 Defender of the Public Good Award at a dinner attended by over
120 community members at Sala San Marco.

The Defender of the Public Good Award was inaugurated by The Social Planning
Council of Ottawa in 2005 to celebrate the work of people in the community
who have made an outstanding contribution to the public good. The dinner
celebrated the three 2007 Nominees, Ms Hale, Bob Crook and Rob MacDonald,
who have each shown outstanding vision and achievements in addressing
poverty.

"The person who won the Award this year works in the depths of poverty every
day, has the ability to effectively advocate for this group of people at all
levels of our society and government.", said Elinor Mueller as she presented
award on behalf of the Social Planning Council.

"The values of the Alliance are inclusion, collaboration, creativity, and
mutual respect," Ms. Hale told the dinner guests. "The WITH Leadership
Training program we developed [with the Canadian Mental Health Association]
reflects all of these values. [The program] trains people who have had
experiences of homelessness in the skills needed to sit on agency boards and
committees and provides mentorship opportunities to practice those skills."

The personal is political and gaining the confidence to speak from one's
authentic position is key to changing perceptions and moving others to
action. Centre 454 is fortunate to have two of the graduates from this
program on our Program Committee." said Ms. Hale.

The Alliance to End Homelessness in Ottawa is a coalition of 70 +
organizations and numerous individuals working collaboratively to develop
strategies to end homelessness.
