The 'Challenging Discrimination in Housing' Conference takes place on November 9th at Ben Franklin Place.  

It is open to all agencies, workers and individuals. (posters attached)
 
Women, youth, New Canadians, and people in receipt of public assistance often face discrimination in the rental market, thereby increasing the risk of homelessness.  Prospective tenants are often told that available units are 'for working people only.' Newcomers are  often asked to front a year's rent in advance.  Although these practices are illegal many people are often unaware of what constitutes discrimination or how to address it.
 
The purpose of the Discrimination Conference is twofold:
 1. Provide education and resources to the community around discrimination and concrete ways of addressing it,
 2. Promote the system and complaint process so that more people can access it
 
The agenda of the day will include information on what the Code says, how to use the legislation, and a guided discussion on recognizing the various forms of discrimination.
