Women’s Eyes on the Provincial Election

What you can do to help our city

Join with the mayor and City Councillors to call on provincial candidates to
fund social services in Ontario cities.  

As Ottawa City Council makes decisions for the 2008 budget, they are once
again faced with a serious shortage of funds.  Vital social services are at
risk of being cut.  

Cities across Ontario have faced the same funding shortages since the 1990’s
when the provincial government ‘downloaded’ onto cities full or partial
responsibility for funding many social services like social housing and
public health.  Today, Ontario is the only province in Canada where property
taxes pay for social programs.  This is too much burden on one source of
funding.

It is time that all candidates commit to ‘uploading’ that funding back to
the province so that cities in Ontario can ensure quality of life for
everyone. 

*      Between now and October 10th, let’s ask every candidate in the
provincial election to commit to taking immediate action to improve funding
for cities. Send an e-mail to the candidates in your riding (List of
candidates attached).  

*      Phone the candidates’ offices and tell them you want a fair deal for
cities.

*      Ask a question at an all-candidates meeting.  (List of meetings
attached).

*      Check to see if you’re HYPERLINK

Day. If you're not on the list, you can simply present photo ID with your

*      Be sure to vote on October 10 for the candidate that commits to
funding social services in Ontario cities.

In this way, we work with our City Council to ensure quality of life for all
Ottawa residents.

Sample message to ask the candidates in your riding

Dear Candidate:

Ottawa is facing an ongoing financial crisis, and I want you to do something
about it. Ontario is the only province in Canada where property taxes pay
for social programs, and everyone agrees that should change. 

We also need fair funding restored for public transit operations instead of
fare increases or service cuts.

I know how important this is because I rely on city social services to…

I want you to commit to take immediate action if you are elected.

Joignez-vous au maire et aux conseillers municipaux pour réclamer aux
candidats et candidates provinciaux le financement des services sociaux dans
les villes ontariennes.

Alors que le Conseil municipal d’Ottawa prend des décisions concernant le
budget 2008, il fait face, encore une fois, à une sérieuse insuffisance de
fonds. Nos services sociaux essentiels risquent d’être réduits. 

Des villes partout en Ontario font face aux mêmes manques de fonds depuis
les années 1990, quand le gouvernement provincial s’est « déchargé » de sa
responsabilité de financer plusieurs services sociaux, comme le logement
social et la santé publique. Aujourd’hui, l’Ontario est la seule province
canadienne où l’impôt foncier finance les programmes sociaux. C’est un
fardeau trop élevé pour une seule source de financement.

Il est temps que tous les partis s’engagent à « re-charger » la province de
ce financement, afin que les villes ontariennes puissent assurer une
certaine qualité de vie à tout le monde.

*        D’ici au 10 octobre, demandons à chaque candidat et candidate aux
élections municipales de s’engager à prendre immédiatement des mesures pour
améliorer le financement des villes. Envoyez un courriel au candidat ou à la
candidate dans votre circonscription. (Voir la liste des candidats et
candidates en pièce jointe).

*       Téléphonez aux bureaux des candidats et candidates et dites-leur que
vous voulez que les municipalités soient traitées de façon équitable.

*        Posez-leur une question lors d’une réunion générale des candidats
et candidates. (Voir la liste des réunions en pièce jointe.)

De cette façon, nous travaillons avec le Conseil municipal afin d’assurer la
qualité de vie de tous les résidants et résidantes d’Ottawa.

La ville d’Ottawa fait face à une crise financière de longue durée, et je
veux que vous y fassiez quelque chose. L’Ontario est la seule province

monde est d’accord pour dire que cela devrait changer.

Il faudrait aussi restituer un financement équitable des activités du
système de transport public plutôt que d’augmenter les tarifs ou de réduire
le service.

Je veux que vous vous engagiez à prendre immédiatement des mesures
nécessaires si vous êtes élu (élue).
