*Greeting from CCJC,*

* *

* *

*I am sending you an invitation to a very interesting event on May 6th. It
is a public interview, by CBC's Michael Enright, of a US expert on the
extremely destructive impacts of some sentencing policies there, over the
last 30 years - policies just like the ones Canada is currently expanding
here. This is an opportunity for serious reflection and exchange for people
who are NOT of like mind, as the floor will be opened to questions from the
audience. *

* *

*I am hoping you will come, and encourage your networks to come as well**,
for some serious airing of these important issues. This is a time when
Canada is at quite a pivotal juncture, poised to invest a lot of money into
building the new prisons that will be required to implement these and other
similar policy directions. Yet we now have plenty of evidence that this is
ineffective and the money is needed for investment in other programs and
services beneficial to all Canadians and also proven to be more successful
at preventing crime and reducing re-offending. The invitation is here below
as well as in the attachment. I am also sending you the media advisory
(English and French).*

* *

* *

*Please help spread the news to draw people to this event!*

*Race to Imitate—*

*Should Canada import failed U.S. criminal justice policies?*

* *

* *

*Event: Public interview with CBC's Michael Enright and Marc
Mauer of the Washington D. C. Sentencing Project*

*Date:                Tuesday, May 6 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.*

*Location: Amphitheatre, St. Paul University, 223 Main Street,
Ottawa    (North entrance)*

* *

* *

*One percent of the U.S. adult population is in prison. This is the highest
rate in the world, even higher than Russia and China. Why are U.S.
policymakers reconsidering their "tough on crime" approach? What lessons
could Canadians learn from the United States about crime control, criminal
justice policy and incarceration? *

* *

*On May 6, Marc Mauer, Executive Director of the Washington, D.C. Sentencing
Project, will answer questions at a public interview to be held at St. Paul
University in Ottawa. Mauer is the author of Race to Incarcerate, in which
he explains how more incarceration may actually cause crime. He questions
why Canada wants to imitate criminal justice policies that have failed in
the United States. *

* *

*Interviewing Mr. Mauer will be Michael Enright, host of CBC Radio's The
Sunday Edition and The Enright Files. Following the interview, the floor
will be opened to questions from the audience.*

* *

*This event is intended to provoke public conversation around Canada's new
crime agenda: *

* *

   - *Is it time to "get tough on crime"—what do the statistics say? *
   - *What are the costs and benefits of increasing the use of prison
   sentences?** *
   - *What are the alternatives to prison, and how effective are they? *

*  *
