01/08/08.

Dear Mrs, dear Mr,

Thank you for taking the time to express your support for an anti-poverty plan for Canada.

Like you, I am deeply concerned by the poverty issue.

As you know, the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities has undertaken a study on poverty and the federal government's role in reducing it. As a member of the Committee, I am actively participating in the study and welcome suggestions and information provided by witnesses to define the federal government's role in reducing poverty.

Defining the government's role in reducing poverty is all the more important since Quebec has already defined its own. Quebec adopted the National Strategy to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion, which is intended to make Quebec, "by 2013, one of the industrialized nations having the least number of persons living in poverty, according to recognized methods for making international comparisons." It is also the only province to have passed legislation to combat poverty and social exclusion.

I believe that adopting an anti-poverty plan for Canada that respects Quebec's areas of jurisdiction and those of the other provinces by providing them with the opportunity to opt out with full compensation and without conditions would be a positive step toward reducing poverty.

Thank you again for sharing your views on this issue. They will be very useful in helping me carry out my duties as an MP and member of the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

Yours sincerely,

 Yves Lessard, MP

"Those who do not feel pain much, seldom think that it is felt. And yes, to wipe all tears from all faces is a task too hard for mortals; but to alleviate misfortunes is often within the most limited power: yet the opportunities which every day affords of relieving the most wretched of human beings are overlooked and neglected with equal disregard of policy and goodness."
