Celebrating Success

Across the province affordable housing and homelessness services have
utilized federal and provincially-funded programs to improve the quality of
life for residents. This session will showcase four programs that have
been successful in meeting the needs of residents in their community.
Community champions will share their stories and the impact that the funding
has made on their community success. This session will also probe the
question "what if the funding ends".

The Honourable Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social
Services, and Mr. Tatum Wilson, Senior Policy Advisor, Poverty Reduction to
Minister Matthews, will be in attendance and will address delegates as part
of presentations by Home Suite Hope, Ottawa Inner City Health, Woollen Mill
and The Housing Resource Centre.

Thursday September 25, 10:50 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Closing Plenary: Judy Rebick

A well-known social justice activist, writer, broadcaster and speaker,
currently the CAW-Sam Gindin Chair in Social Justice and Democracy at
Ryerson University, and the publisher of rabble.ca, Canada’s most popular
independent online news and discussion site.

As one of Canada's best-known activists and social commentators, Judy Rebick
takes a compelling look at how Canada can grow and prosper by tapping into
its greatest strength – its people. Ms. Rebick uses the lessons learned in
an illustrious life of activism to prove how a democratic society can work.

During the 1990’s, Judy was the host of two national TV shows on CBC
Newsworld and a frequent commentator on CBC radio and television. She also
contributes commentaries to a host of newspapers and magazines. Judy is
perhaps best known to Canadians as a former president of the National Action
Committee on the Status of Women, Canada’s largest women’s group. She is
also a Board member of Alternatives, a Quebec based international NGO and on
the advisory boards of Fair Vote Canada and the December 6 Coalition.

New Sessions:

     Tuesday, September 23 – 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Session 1.4 “Right at
home:” Focus on Human Rights and Rental Housing

In July 2008, the Ontario Human Rights Commission launched “Right at home:
Report on the consultation on human rights and rental housing in Ontario.”
This report, which follows a year of public sessions, meetings and
submissions involving hundreds of individuals and organizations across the
province, focuses on housing as a human right, and sets out a framework for
collective action to identify, remove and prevent discrimination in rental
housing.

“Right at home” includes 37 recommended actions for various levels of
government, decision-makers such as housing tribunals and boards, partners
in affordable housing development, social housing providers, private-market
housing providers, service providers, tenant organizations and human rights
advocates.

This workshop will feature an overview of what the Commission heard, and the
recommendations and commitments arising from this. The session will focus on
the experiences and recommendations directed to social housing
administrators and providers, and will include a discussion of what steps
the social housing sector can take to help all Ontarians truly feel “right
at home.”

Speaker: Anya Kater, Inquiry Analyst, Policy and Education Branch, Ontario
Human Rights Commission

Tuesday, September 23 – 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Session 2.3 The Affordable
Housing Program: What We Have Achieved, What We Have

  Learned

The Canada–Ontario Affordable Housing Program (AHP) has produced thousands
of affordable homes for singles, families and seniors across Ontario. It has
also served to revitalize communities and cities, and is a proven economic
catalyst. This interactive session will give you – the housing professional
– the opportunity to reflect with colleagues across Ontario on your
successes, challenges, best practices and lessons learned, and share your
valuable experiences with the AHP. Hosted and facilitated by the AHP
Technical Advisory Team, this hands-on workshop will focus on approaches
that have worked well in your community, those that could have worked better
and ideally what lessons need to be brought forward and incorporated into
future housing programs. All ideas from this session will be captured and
presented by the Technical Team to various stakeholders and all levels of
government, as a basis for future investments in affordable housing.

Facilitators:

Julie Adam, Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, AHP Technical
Advisory Team Co-Chair

Drew Goursky, Region of Peel, AHP Technical Advisory Team Co-Chair
