A new book entitled Violence Against Women: An International Perspective

Violence against women has been described by the Secretary-General of the
United Nations as
the most shameful human rights violation and perhaps the most pervasive.

A resolution by the UN General Assembly in December 2006 called for
intensified efforts to
eliminate violence against women, including the expansion of systematic data
collection and
analysis. Improved data and information are required to make such violence
visible, to better
understand its nature and prevalence, and to formulate appropriate policies.

A new book entitled Violence Against Women: An International Perspective,
presents the
results of the International Violence Against Women Survey which interviewed
23,000 women
from nine different countries. Highlights include:

In the majority of countries, between 22% and 40% of women have been
assaulted by an intimate partner
Between 10% and 31% have been sexually assaulted by men other than intimate
partners
Risk of committing violence against an intimate partner is higher for male
partners who:
Use controlling or emotionally abusive behaviours
Abuse alcohol
Are violent toward others outside the home
Witness or experience parental violence in childhood
Intimate partner violence is reported to the police in fewer than 20% of
cases
Sexual assault is reported to the police in fewer than 10% of cases

For more information, see Johnson, H., Ollus, N. & Nevala, S. (2008).
