New Homelessness Resource Center Web Site Launched

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) new Homelessness Resource Center (HRC) Web site<http://homeless.samhsa.gov/Default.aspx> launched this week. Targeted toward providers who work with people who are homeless, the website shares state-of-the art knowledge, evidence-based practices, and practical resources. It provides an interactive learning community for researchers, providers, consumers, and government agencies at all levels. It is an easy-to-manage resource with content that informs, features that engage, and training that is useful. These elements are brought together to promote recovery-oriented and consumer-centered services for people who are homeless. September is Suicide Prevention Month
Here are a number of free resources and information related to suicide prevention:

The Harvard Injury Control Research Center announces a new resource for suicide prevention groups. Meansmatter.org<http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/means-matter/> is devoted to reducing suicide by reducing a suicidal person's access to lethal means, especially firearms, during a suicidal crisis. Visit the website for research summaries, practical strategies, slide shows, brochures, state survey results, state data, and program examples.

The International Association for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to preventing suicidal behavior, to alleviate its effects, and to provide a forum for academicians, mental health professionals, crisis workers, volunteers and suicide survivors. The call for papers for the 42nd American Association of Suicidology annual conference, taking place April 15-18, is now available. Submissions must be received by October 31, 2008.
 *   Interactive Stories of Hope and Recovery

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has launched the Lifeline Gallery: Stories of Hope and Recovery, in which users can easily create online representations of themselves as a way to enable suicide survivors, suicide attempt survivors, and suicide prevention supporters to share their stories of hope and recovery.


New Toolkit Supports Sustainability in Community-Based Programs

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released a free toolkit, "Sustaining Grassroots Community-Based Programs: A Toolkit for Community- and Faith-Based Service Providers". Sustainability is about maintaining and continuing program services after a funding period is over and ensuring that the organization has become a permanent part of community resources.  The toolkit contains useful tips and planning worksheets within six booklets that cover such topics as strategic planning, organizational assessment, effective marketing strategies, and fundraising. Call for Workshop Proposals

The National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare invites presentation proposals for the 39th Annual National Council Conference. The conference convenes Monday, April 6 - Wednesday, April 8 at the Grand Hyatt in San Antonio, Texas and brings together mental health and addiction's best people, practices, and opportunities for learning and networking. Workshop proposals must be interactive; feature a program, service or initiative that is practical and replicable; have measurable outcomes; and offer concrete "Tools to Use" that attendees can implement in their organization. Survey Seeks Input on State Mental Health Systems

To aid in its assessment of the public mental health system in each of the 50 U.S. states, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is soliciting responses to an online survey from anyone at least 18 years old who has been diagnosed with major depression, bipolar disorder and/or schizophrenia, or who has an adult family member with such a diagnosis; or those who might also be able to comment on personal experiences with the public adult mental health system in his/her state. The survey takes about 15 minutes and is anonymous.
