END CHILD & FAMILY POVERTY IN CANADA April 2009

POVERTY REDUCTION IN ONTARIO:

 What actions can you take?

*Where we are now:*

   - Ontario Poverty Reduction Strategy announced Dec ’08 with target to cut
child poverty rate by 25% by 2013.
   - The plan identifies the Low Income Measure and other indicators that
will be used to track progress.

**

   - *Strategy includes*: increase to Ontario Child Benefit; a review of
social assistance in 2009; public consultation in spring/summer 2009 to
develop an affordable housing strategy; new Temp Agency legislation (Bill
139); and a new Community Opportunities Fund.
   - New poverty reduction legislation (Bill 152) introduced spring ’09 to
ensure annual reporting on progress and public consultation.

**

   - *Budget 2009 included*: funding for Ontario Child Benefit increase &
social housing construction/retrofit. *But *no new funding for child
care, no $100/month food allowance for social assistance recipients and only
   2% increase to rates.

**

*What can YOU do to keep up the pressure?*

**

Ø*Child Care*

-No new provincial funding for child care is devastating for child
care programs.

-Federal funding expires in 2010. Without new provincial funds
Ontario may lose 22,000 child care subsidies, starting this September.

-Cutting subsidies will hurt low income families, making it harder
to work or get training.

-Send a message to your MPP via www.waitingforchildcare.ca

-Or email the Premier directly dmcguinty.mpp.co at liberal.ola.org

Ø *Affordable Housing*

-Get ready for a local housing consultation to be held by your MPP
late spring.

         -Check www.safeandaffordable.com for updates.

Ø *Social Assistance*

* -*See www.incomesecurity.org for updates on social assistance
review.

* -*Check www.povertywatchontario.ca for details of “Put Food in the
Budget” campaign & to sign online petition.
