Hi folks, 

My apologies if you have already received this message - some e-mails I sent out last week have apparently died a horrible death in cyberspace and so not reached their destination. I'm re-sending them hoping they get through this time. 

Some of you may know that I am involved with the Ottawa Poverty Reduction Network (OPRN). This group has been meeting for just over a year and has been involved in training low income people to participate in the provincial processes around the Poverty Reduction Strategy. We also participated in the various consultations held in Ottawa by MPPs and Deb Matthews. When we saw that these consultations were focusing only on low income people and the organizations that work with them, we organized a broad-based community consultation in June. 

One of the recommendations that came out of the consultation was that the City of Ottawa should develop a municipal Poverty Reduction Strategy. (I've attached a chart with the other recommendations to the city and province.) OPRN went to the Community & Protective Services (CPS) Committee in November with the support of the Poverty Issues Advisory Committee and asked that the City create such a Strategy. CPS approved it and on December 10th (International Human Rights Day), it was approved by Council. The Council motion is attached. 

Colleen Hendrick has been working on the Strategy and is bringing a report on Phase 1 to CPS on Thursday April 16th. That meeting starts at 9:30 and it is the 3rd item on the agenda. It would be very useful if people could come out to support the Strategy at Committee. I have attached Colleen's report to this email so you can have a look through it.
