Mental Health Week, May 4-8, Features Suicide Prevention Workshop, Prozac
Nation film  

 

During Mental Health Week, May 4-8 2009, the Canadian Mental Health
Association, Ottawa Branch, and the Ottawa Suicide Prevention Coalition will
present a workshop entitled Hope in Action: Solution Focused Suicide
Prevention on May 6. 

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is a client-centered approach that builds on
people’s strengths and hopes for the future. The workshop will focus on
using solution-focused methods with individuals at risk for suicide. 

What:               Hope in Action: Solution Focused Suicide Prevention

Featuring Dr. Heather Fiske

Date:                Tuesday, May 6, 9:00: am to 3:00 pm

Where:              Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites, Downtown Ottawa

111 Cooper Street, Oxford Room

 

The workshop will be particularly useful given the high profile of suicide
in Ottawa in recent months. 

 

Dr. Heather Fiske is a psychologist who has worked in hospitals, community
clinics, schools, and correctional facilities.  She is a member of the
Provincial Advisory Board of the Ontario Suicide Prevention Network and a
past member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Suicide
Prevention (CASP) One of the founders of the Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
Association, she teaches a postgraduate program in solution-focused therapy
at the University of Toronto and also trains service providers to the
homeless.

Mad About the Arts, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa Diversity
and Accessibility on Campus Symposium will present the film, Prozac Nation,
on May 8. 

 

What:               Screening of Prozac Nation, an independent film based on
an emotionally charged true story about a journey into excess, existential
crisis and recovery from paralyzing depression, followed by a panel
discussion 

When:               May 8, 7:00 p.m.

Where:              Alumni Auditorium, Jock Turcott University Centre, 

                        85 Université Private, University of Ottawa

Cost:                $10, $6 student, low income, CFI member
