Subject: New Youth Housing Resources - Federal Policy Initiative
New Youth Housing Resources Webpage
To encourage increased production of youth housing among national and local
field leaders, the National Alliance to End Homelessness has posted a
webpage dedicated to youth housing models, best practices, funding, and
public policy. The webpage also has links to various resources developed by
HUD, HHS, the Corporation for Supportive Housing, and the Finance Project.
We hope the resources will be helpful to local organization's effort to
expand the spectrum of housing opportunities to homeless youth.
The Alliance is concerned that the United States fails to invest adequate
resources to produce a supply of housing sufficient to prevent youth from
sleeping on the streets. The Alliance's work to end youth homelessness is
now focused on bringing to scale federal resources and efficient policies to
substantially increase the supply of youth housing programs.
Public Policy Advocacy:
The Alliance has developed a policy proposal that offers a framework for
assisting 50,000 homeless youth annually (a significant increase from the
approximate 4,000 homeless youth served with transitional housing resources
currently). We believe that limited public funding should be targeted to
meet multifarious levels of needs presented by demographic clusters of
homeless youth. Some youth will be best served with access to family
housing, others require transitional housing support, some only require
one-time financial assistance or shallow subsidies, and others require
long-term or even permanent supportive housing. We intend to review this
proposal with Congress and seek federal investment in a range of housing
solutions.
If you would like to be a part of this policy initiative, please respond to
this email. We are building a national data base of homeless youth
advocates and youth housing specialists to work cooperatively toward the
goal of significantly increasing the nation's supply of youth housing.
Web-based Resources:
In addition, the Alliance recently completed a pre-conference institute at
its annual conference on youth housing models, funding, and federal policy.
