As the year draws to a close, the Housing Network of Ontario would like to
remind you that you can still take action in 2009 to support the right for
all Ontarians to live poverty-free with dignity in housing that is stable,
adequate, equitably accessible and affordable.

*1. If you haven’t done so already, make a written submission to the
long-term affordable housing strategy consultation!*

* *

On the HNO website you will find a sample letter that can be used to make a
written submission to the long-term affordable housing strategy
consultation, as well as the HNO submission. You can find them
here<http://www.stableandaffordable.com/content/submissions-long-term-affordable-housing-strategy>.
You can alter the sample letter to suit your own community needs, and it can
be mailed to the Ministry of Housing, or emailed to:
housingstrategy.mah at ontario.ca We hope that you are able to make a written
submission before the deadline of December 31, 2009.

*2. Ask to make an oral deputation during the pre-budget consultations!*

The Housing Network of Ontario is encouraging housing and anti-poverty
activists to make deputations to the Standing Committee Finance and Economic
Affairs. The Committee is holding pre-budget consultations in 6 cities:
Niagara Falls, London, Dryden, North Bay, Kingston and Toronto. We must
ensure that the Ontario government hears the message loud and clear: now is
the time to invest in affordable housing, and Ontarians need a down-payment
on the long-term affordable housing strategy in the 2010 budget! If you
live in or near one of the 6 cities, please request an opportunity to make a
presentation by contacting the clerk of the committee at: (416) 325-3883
Collect calls are accepted, and you need to make your request before January
13, 2010. More information can be found at:
http://www.ontla.on.ca/committee-proceedings/committee-hearings-notices/files_html/Ad%20-%20Pre-budget%202010%20-%20english.htm

*3. Arrange to meet with your MPP to advocate for affordable housing in your
community!*

* *

Our elected officials need to hear that the lack of affordable housing in
our communities is an urgent and pressing need that must be addressed, both
in the 2010 budget, and through a comprehensive, fully-funded long-term
affordable housing strategy. You can use the attached tip-sheet, produced
by HNO-partner Campaign 2000, for information and suggestions on how to
begin lobbying your MPP. Feel free to use other materials available on the
Housing Network of Ontario website when you meet with your MPP.

The Housing Network of Ontario would like to thank everyone who took part in
the broad campaign for affordable housing this summer and fall. Further
information about the Housing Network of Ontario, including a report from
our recent provincial leadership forum, the HNO submission and other
materials are available on our website at: www.stableandaffordable.com
