Community Food Security Research and Policy Development Coordinator
A community-university-city research team, led by Dr. Elizabeth Kristjannson
at the University of Ottawa , and Moe Garahan at Just Food, has just
received a 2 year grant from Canadian Institutes of Health Research to work
with community partners on the following:
- Develop, with broad community participation, food security policies in
Ottawa with a focus on six areas: food insecurity and health, food retail
environments and food deserts, food insecurity and obesity, school meals,
urban agriculture and rural agriculture.
- Adapt and pilot a community food security assessment toolkit to assess and
monitor community food security
- Build capacity within communities to implement policies aimed at
increasing community food security.
CONTRACT: Either 3 or 4 days/week for 2 years (March 2009 February 2011).
Days to be negotiated with successful candidate.
Evening and weekend work will be required on occasion.
SALARY: $25/hr + benefits and vacation
Reporting: The position is hosted by Just Food (HYPERLINK
"http://www.justfood.ca/" \nwww.justfood.ca), housed in the Social Planning
Council. Bi-weekly Steering Committee meetings will set direction, with
day-to-day supervision coming from the Director of Just Food.
Community-University-City Advisory Committee will meet throughout the
project for overall input.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and organized, experienced in
both food security issues/initiatives and community development, and looking
for an opportunity to increase their involvement in this area in Ottawa .
Specific responsibilities include:
* Gather, compile and synthesize existing research/information as
baseline for work in Ottawa .
* Generate materials in plain language for community workshops.
* Outreach, organize and assist in facilitating community-based
meetings, workshops, events.
* Assist in creation of community assessment toolkit and evaluation
materials.
* Coordinate communications throughout the project, including
maintaining all information/research/contacts, manage website content.
* Promote cooperation among diverse members of community.
* Take the lead in drafting community food security policy deriving
from project work.
* Work with team to conduct evaluation of the project.
* Share responsibility for supervising the research assistants.
* Project administration, including tracking budget expenditures,
organizing and recording meetings, etc.
Skills & Qualifications:
* Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to food security issues
* Community organizing/community-based experience
* Research experience and skills
* Strong leadership, planning and project management abilities
* Ability to work with diverse stakeholders
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English,
including interpersonal skills and working with small and large groups
* Good computer and desktop publishing skills
* Ability to work autonomously and as a team member
* A positive attitude, highly motivated
Considered an asset:
* Bilingual French and English language skills
* Facilitation skills and experience
* Knowledge of Ottawa and area
* Other language skills
* Facility with website design
