Kindness Week 2009 - Drive for Drivers

Imagine having an important medical appointment and not being able to get
there. Now more than ever, many residents in our community are facing that
problem. Volunteer drivers, using their own cars, are needed to take seniors
and adults with disabilities to these appointments.

We are looking for reliable and enthusiastic individuals to provide
transportation services for essential medical appointments. Your support
will make all the difference. 

Drive for Drivers Project

This project is one of several activities that are being launched during
Kindness Week (February 16-22) to encourage the kindness that can be in
Ottawa.  The project aims to provide transportation, at a reasonable cost,
to seniors and adults with disabilities who are unable to drive or use
public buses or ParaTranspo to get around. Volunteer drivers will drive the
client to and from the appointment, provide assistance as needed and ensure
their safety.  They will be compensated for actual car mileage, and client
fees will go towards funding the operational costs.

This project is a partnership between the Ottawa Community Support Coalition
(OCSC), Volunteer Ottawa, The Good Companions, Glebe Centre, United
Way/Centraide Ottawa and volunteers from our community.

Volunteer Application Process

To volunteer, individuals must:

*	complete an application and an interview; 
*	obtain a free Police Record Check for Service with the Vulnerable
Sector; 
*	provide three references; and 
*	have a valid driver’s license, insurance and a good driving record. 

Volunteer drivers are given an orientation by the Transportation Program
Coordinator of their agency and are offered training opportunities, whenever
possible.

Imaginez être incapable de vous rendre à un rendez-vous médical important
faute d’un moyen de transport adéquat. Plus que jamais, plusieurs résidents
d’Ottawa font face à ce problème. Des chauffeurs bénévoles, utilisant leur
propre automobile, sont demandés pour conduire des aînés et des adultes
handicapés  à leurs rendez-vous.  

Nous cherchons des individus responsables et enthousiastes, en mesure de
conduire des gens à des rendez-vous médicaux importants. Votre appui fera
toute la différence.  

Le projet Chauffeurs demandés

Ce projet est une de plusieurs activités lancées au cours de la Semaine de
la bonté pour encourager différentes manifestations de bonté à Ottawa. Ce
projet vise à fournir un moyen de transport, à un coût raisonnable, aux
aînés et aux adultes handicapés incapable de conduire, d’emprunter les
autobus régulier ou de se servir de ParaTranspo pour se déplacer. Les
chauffeurs bénévoles vont conduire le client jusqu’au lieu de son
rendez-vous et le reconduire à son point de départ, en l’aidant au besoin et
en veillant à sa sécurité. Les chauffeurs seront rémunérés en fonction de la
distance parcourue, et les frais payés par les clients serviront à défrayer
les coûts de l’opération.    

Ce projet est un partenariat établi entre la Coalition des services de
soutien communautaire d’Ottawa (CSSCO), Bénévoles  Ottawa, Les Bons
compagnons, le Glebe Centre, Centraide/United Way Ottawa et des bénévoles de
notre communauté.

Processus d’enregistrement des bénévoles

Pour devenir chauffeur bénévole, le candidat doit :

*	remplir un formulaire de demande et se rendre à une entrevue ; 
*	obtenir auprès de la police un certificat gratuit d’Habilitation à
travailler auprès des personnes vulnérables ; 
*	fournir trois références personnelles ; et 
*	posséder un permis de conduire valide, une assurance automobile et
un bon dossier de conduite.  

Les chauffeurs bénévoles participent à une séance d’orientation organisée
par le coordonnateur du transport de leur agence, et peuvent profiter chaque
fois que c’est possible de séances de formation.
