Hello everyone,

The Alliance to End Homelessness is a member of the Ottawa Branch of the
Housing Network of Ontario (HNO) which held its first ‘organizers’ meeting
last Tuesday. Representatives from 14 groups came to that first meeting to
begin preparing for Ontario’s Affordable Housing Consultation underway until
the end of December. (ATEH is also member of the province-wide group and
sits on its steering committee.)

Last week, we agreed that each of us will work in our networks to encourage
broad community participation in the consultation to develop a long-term
affordable housing strategy for Ontario, starting with the regional
consultation session here in Ottawa on Monday, July 27th 6:30 to 9:30 pm.

Below are the HNO declaration, which we hope you will endorse, and 3 tools
to help in engaging others. Mid-summer can be a challenging time, so your
help to make July 27th successful will be very important.

In the meanwhile, the Ottawa Branch of HNO will plan some advance media work
for the 27th and work on a community-owned event to set the context in the
hours prior to the evening consultation – more on that soon. Gene Williams
(SWCHC) has very kindly offered to take notes for us on the 27th to record
the community’s concerns and comments that are raised so we’ll be able to
post a ‘report from Ottawa’ on HYPERLINK
"http://www.stableandaffordable.com/"www.stableandaffordable.com. On that
site you can read reports from other regional sessions. We have sent a
letter to local MPPs to ask them to hold their own riding consultation this
fall (not this summer). That’s something you can ask for too. More sessions
equals more visibility and community-wide support for affordable housing.
Let me know if you’d like to be on the list for the “Ottawa Branch of HNO”,
other wise watch for news and updates on the Alliance listserv.

Tools / Files for you

(Three of these are Word files so please use/adapt them as needed in your
efforts to get both staff and community people involved in the consultation.

1.	Housing Network of Ontario Declaration – Please read the Declaration
and consider endorsing it as an agency and/or as an individual at HYPERLINK
"http://www.stableandaffordable.com/"www.stableandaffordable.com. We ask
that you circulate the declaration widely for other signatures. The 4
priority statements are useful speaking points. They cover: the
affordability of housing; the availability of affordable housing; supports,
programs and protections to access and maintain housing; and a clear way to
measure progress.
2.	How to Participate in Ottawa on July 27th – This tool gives details
of the regional consultation in Ottawa on July 27th 6:30-9:30 pm and gives
MPPs’ contact info. It also explains the three other methods to participate
before the end of the consultation in December. Please consider offering
support to people with lived experience to participate in the consultations
so they can offer their solutions backed up with their own stories. For
instance, some people might need help registering if they don’t have
internet.
3.	The Need for Affordable Housing in Ottawa – This document is a
starting point Ottawa affordable housing audit with some realities of
housing availability, incomes and homelessness in Ottawa. People can use it
to back up what they want to say. In the interests of time it was based on
the data in our 2008 Report Card on Ending Homelessness; I know there is
much more data and information we can pull together about Ottawa. Please
send me what ever you’d like to include in an Ottawa affordable housing
audit.
4.	Poster – this poster has space for your own use. The highlighted
text is just a sample of how you and your agency or group might use it with
your own networks, tenants etc.

There’s more about Housing Network of Ontario (HNO) below and at HYPERLINK
"http://www.stableandaffordable.com/"www.stableandaffordable.com.

Thanks,

Lynne
