To coincide with Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 5-9, 2009), the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research (IMHR) proudly presents a public lecture on Thursday, October 8, 2009, at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, 1145 Carling Avenue, Room 1410, from 9.00 am - 2.00 pm.

In partnership with the Ottawa Operational Stress Injury Clinic (OSI), the purpose of this public lecture is to explore trauma-induced post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to showcase the hope emerging from research into the new treatment for PTSD. This event will feature:


 *   Dr. Roger Keith Pitman, Harvard Medical School, whose specialty is PTSD and newly emerging treatment strategies
 *   Dr. Alain Brunet, Douglas Research Centre, who will discuss PTSD and the translation of laboratory-based research to clinical application
 *   Victoria Maxwell, comedian, from the Crazy for Life Company, who will present a solo sketch, a brave, funny, and compelling look at experiencing, surviving and coming to terms with mental illness, with PTSD as the theme
 *   A personal testimonial
An ensuing question and answer period will complete the day's events

We are expecting a diverse audience of over 150 participants, including researchers, academics, various health professionals, community organizations and lay persons. Stay tuned for more details!

Afin de souligner la Semaine de sensibilisation aux maladies mentales (du 5 au 11 octobre 2009), l'Institut de recherche en santé mentale (IRSM) de l'Université d'Ottawa est fier de présenter une conférence publique le jeudi 8 octobre 2009 au Centre de santé mentale Royal Ottawa, au 1145 de l'avenue Carling, à la salle 1410, de 9 h à 14 h.

Offerte en partenariat avec la Clinique de traitement des traumatismes liés au stress opérationnel d'Ottawa, cette conférence aura pour objectif d'explorer les troubles de stress post-traumatique (TSPT) et de mettre en lumière l'espoir qui émerge de la recherche sur les nouvelles façons de traiter ces troubles. Les personnes suivantes prendront la parole :


 *   le Dr Roger Keith Pitman, spécialiste en TSPT et en traitements émergents, de la Harvard Medical School;
 *   le Dr Alain Brunet, du Centre de recherche de l'Hôpital Douglas, qui traitera des TSPT et de l'application de la recherche scientifique dans la pratique clinique;
 *   Victoria Maxwell, humoriste de la troupe Crazy for Life Company, qui présentera un numéro solo à la fois courageux, touchant et amusant sur la manifestation de la maladie mentale, sur l'acceptation et sur le rétablissement, le tout axé sur le thème des TSPT;
 *   une personne qui présentera un témoignage personnel.
Une période de questions suivra les allocutions.

Quelque 150 participants sont attendus, dont des chercheurs, des enseignants, des professionnels de la santé, des représentants d'organismes communautaires ainsi que des non-spécialistes.
