Working together to show community support paid off! 

 

Hello everyone,

 

Yesterday at 5:55 p.m., City Council accepted the Community and Protective
Services Committee recommendation to re-integrate existing social housing
and residential supports with affordable housing and create a Manager of
Housing position at a senior manager level. 

 

It’s a success story for the community to get this change through Council
and it is one ATEH members can be proud of. The Steering Committee was very
pleased to work together with agencies and networks leading up to and at the
June 1st CPSC meeting and especially appreciated that many members sent
letters to Councillors before yesterday’s meeting. Quite a few Councillors
have now thanked ATEH for getting the issue out into the public realm and
then providing a proposal to move a resolution forward, while working to
demonstrate community support.

 

We were able to achieve bringing the development and planning of affordable
housing back to CPS under a new senior Manager of Housing.  As you know,
ATEH also believes affordable housing and homeless services and supports
will function more effectively “under the one roof” and senior manager, but,
unfortunately, a number of the CSPC Councillors decided it was not useful to
try to change the motion at yesterday’s Council meeting. 

 

At this stage ATEH will monitor and assess the situation to determine future
actions.  The experience of community agencies tells us that it is extremely
helpful when there is strong and strategic leadership and knowledge at the
municipal level. There is a fundamental relationship between the city's
success in providing affordable housing and the agencies developing and
delivering services and supports for those who are homeless or at risk of
it.

Motion

 

That Council approve the re-integration of existing social housing and
residential supports with affordable housing; and that the position of
Manager for Housing within Community and Social Services, responsible for
social housing, shelter management and new affordable housing development,
be created at a senior manager level.  

 

Que le Conseil approuve la réintégration des services de logement social et
de soutien résidentiel aux services de logement abordable et que soit créé,
au sein des Services sociaux et communautaires, un nouveau poste de cadre
supérieur, soit celui de gestionnaire du Logement, dont le titulaire sera
responsable du logement social, de la gestion des refuges et du
développement du logement abordable.
