The Ontario government is giving a boost to affordable housing with a $1.2
billion joint provincial-federal investment to renovate 50,000 social
housing units and build 4,500 new affordable housing units.

Premier Dalton McGuinty is expected to make the announcement early this
afternoon along with news he will raise the Ontario Child Benefit this July
from $600 to a maximum of $1,100 per child per year.

Increasing the child benefit is part of the province's anti-poverty
strategy. The benefit helps 1.3 million kids by giving parents monthly
support.

The Liberal government pledged four months ago to reduce child poverty by 25
per cent in five years. However, the government was not expected to lift the
benefit this high until 2011.

"These major new initiatives are a significant step toward our goal of
helping Ontario families right now and reaching our long-term goal of
reducing poverty in Ontario," McGuinty said in a news release obtained by
the *Star.*

The investment in social and affordable housing, one anti-poverty advocates
have cried out for more than the past few years, will also create jobs in
Ontario. The government expects the renovation and repair needs will create
23,000 jobs.

Ontario's $600 million affordable housing investment matches $600 million
from the federal government.

Ontario's portion of the investment includes $352 million to repair social
housing and make them energy efficient, $185 million to create new housing
for seniors and persons with disabilities and another $87.5 million to
extend the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program.
