The Alliance to End Homelessness Meeting
Friday, May 15, 2009, 9:00 a.m. ~ 1355 Bank Street, 4th Floor (CMHA)
You are invited to a Special Film Screening of
>From Homeless to Home
How do people become homeless? How do they become stably housed?
Filmmaker: Jason Gondziola
Please join us at this open meeting for the screening and discussion of a
new documentary film about homelessness and housing in Ottawa.
In Ottawa, there has been a long-standing collaboration between Alliance to
End Homelessness and area academics (at the University of Ottawa, Carleton
University and St. Paul’s University). Panel Study on Homelessness in Ottawa
(in two phases from 2002-2005) was a key initiative of this collaboration.
>From Homeless to Home popularizes the results of that study. The film is one
of several communication tools created through a Project to share the study
results with a broader audience than that typically targeted by academics.
May 15th Note: the film includes brief images of an individual
injecting/using drugs. Anyone concerned about viewing such images may wish
to leave the room for the film and return for the discussion afterward.
The project team – Tim Aubry (U of O), Fran Klodawsky and Josh Greenberg
(Carleton) Lynne Browne (ATEH) and Brenda Gallagher (Consultant) – are
pleased to present the film on May 15th.
The following communication tools were produced in recognition that research
must be translated into language and formats that are readily accessible for
politicians, policy-makers and citizens. The tools will be available to
assist agencies, partners and individuals as they work to end homelessness
in our community –
o A popular text version of the Panel Study on Homelessness in Ottawa
– a 12 page booklet, also called From Homeless to Home, that captures
research findings for policy makers, decision makers and citizens.
o Several tools to give a human voice to the research in order to
bring the results to life in radio, film, text and internet friendly
formats:
* Excerpts from interviews with homeless individuals for the Alliance to
End Homelessness web site and as insert in the 2007 Report Card on Ending
Homelessness.
* A radio documentary
* An on-line magazine article; and
* The film – From Homeless to Home
The Project was made possible with funding from the Social Sciences and
Humanities Research Council of Canada through its Homelessness and Diversity
Issues initiative.
