Great News: Today our Federal Government passed a motion to develop a plan
to eliminate poverty in Canada for all! Message from Canada without Poverty
/ Un Canada sans pauvreté - below. This morning, a breakfast was held with
Campaign 2000 partners and some members of Parliament, to launch the Report
Card on Child and Family Poverty, followed by a rally at the centennial
flame. The motion was presented and passed later in the House of Commons.

We are pleased to report some good news in the journey to more effectively
combat poverty in Canada. Today, the House of Commons passed the following
motion as agreed to by the House of Commons HUMA
<http://www2.parl.gc.ca/CommitteeBusiness/CommitteeMembership.aspx?IncMem=0&
Language=E&Mode=1&Parl=40&Ses=2&Cmte=HUMA> Committee:
That, with November 24th, 2009 marking the 20th anniversary of the 1989
unanimous resolution of this House to eliminate poverty among Canadian
children by the year 2000, and not having achieved that goal, be it resolved
that the Government of Canada, taking into consideration the Committees
work in this regard, and respecting provincial and territorial jurisdiction,
develop an immediate plan to eliminate poverty in Canada for all.
With the motion now passed, there is Parliaments commitment to a federal
plan for the elimination of poverty. This is a major step towards
accomplishing the first of the three goals of Dignity for All: The Campaign
for a <http://www.dignityforall.ca/> Poverty-free Canada. The challenge
now is for parliamentarians and civil society including those with the
lived experience of poverty to work together even more closely to
determine the substance and timely delivery as well as the accountability
mechanisms of the plan. And, to root the entire effort within a framework
of Canadas commitment to economic and social rights (food, housing,
adequate standard of living etc.) such as enshrined within international
human rights law to which Canada is signatory.
Todays welcome motion came about thanks to the leading efforts of Laurel
Rothman and her team at Campaign <http://www.dignityforall.ca/> 2000,
working with certain members of the HUMA Committee and other civil society
groups. Kudos to Campaign 2000 and to the members of the HUMA Committee for
todays result!
