Dr. Sue Bennett is an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa. She is also a pediatrician and Director of the Child & Youth Protection Program at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). Her particular interests lie in the promotion and protection of children’s rights as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC 1989).

Dr. Bennett is on the Board of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse & Neglect (ISPCAN) and is one of the founding members of ISPCAN’S Arab Professional Network for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment in the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region. She recently returned from a year in the Middle East developing child protection systems including a national child protection strategy for the United Arab Emirates (UAE). She has also worked for UNICEF in the UAE to develop a rehabilitation program for several hundred former camel jockey boys who had been trafficked from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sudan & Mauritania. Dr. Sue Bennett is considered an international expert in the field of child maltreatment and child protection and receives numerous requests for international presentations.

Presently, she is the Co-Chair of an international working group that is developing a General Comment & Early Implementation for Article 19 of the CRC at the request of the UN Committee for the Rights of the Child, the monitoring body for the CRC. The CRC Article 19 is the premier Article in the Convention that outlines the necessary State responses to all forms of child maltreatment. The General Comment Art. 19 will provide an inspirational interpretation on child protection to the CRC Committee and all governments and will bring a meaningful contribution toward securing the safety, development and futures of all children around the world.
