section:
1. ATEH Submission to the Ontario Government's Consultation on a
Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy
* These recommendations will be used by Marion Wright, the ATEH
incoming Chair and Perry Rowe, Past Chair when they go to Minister Watson's
key stakeholder meeting in Toronto on Nov. 3, 2009.
2. ATEH Submission to HRSDC's Consultation on Federal Homelessness and
Housing Investments
There are similarities in how ATEH frames the issues of homelessness and
affordable housing in both preambles and appendices.
In effect, ATEH asks governments and decision makers to consider Ottawa as
an example and be mindful that there were 7,045 homeless people in Ottawa's
shelters in 2008 and that these were not the same individuals as the 6,572
people homeless in 2007.
Every year new people become homeless due to the lack of new affordable
housing stock and high market rents combined with low incomes.
We stress - with statistics - that each year our member agencies assist
three groups of homeless people - (1) individuals and families who become
homeless for the first time; (2) those who experience repeat episodes of
being homeless as their circumstances deteriorate due to job loss, reduced
working hours, rent increases, unexpected expenses like long illnesses or
funerals; and (3) those who are chronically homeless and need supports to be
housed successfully.
We invite you to share these submissions, and of course, to use or draw from
them as needed.
And we thank you for your support,
Lynne Browne
