HOUSING UPDATE - A CALL FOR A NATIONAL HOUSING STRATEGY
Dear Friends,
As the fall Parliamentary session gets underway, I am pleased to tell you
that my bill for a National Housing Strategy, Bill C-304, will be coming
forward for debate on Friday, September 18th. The Bill will likely face a
vote on Wednesday, September 30th to move it forward to Committee.
Over the summer I heard from peace and justice organizations, anti-poverty
groups and individuals from across the country, that Canada needs a national
program to end the housing insecurity and homelessness facing 3 million
Canadians. I believe that passing Bill C-304 is a step toward this goal.
I invite you and members of the organizations you work with, to contact your
Member of Parliament; let them know you support Bill C-304, and ask them to
VOTE YES to a National Housing Strategy.
You can find phone numbers, email and mailing addresses at:

There is a lot of speculation about where Parliament will be in October, but
right now it's time to make this government work for Canadians.
Read more about Bill C-304 below and read the Bill at

Bill C-304, an Act to ensure secure, adequate, accessible and affordable
housing for Canadians.
As a signatory to the United Nations International Convention on Economic,
Social and Cultural Rights, Canada has an obligation to provide adequate
housing for all its citizens. However, in the past decade, we have fallen
perilously behind on our commitments, leaving 3 Million Canadian households
in housing insecurity and thousands more homeless.
Canada is the only major country in the world without a national housing
strategy.
Bill C-304 calls for a national housing strategy to be established through
the coordinated work of federal, provincial, territorial, municipal and
Aboriginal governments.
This bill is a much needed pan-Canadian framework from which to address
homelessness, invest in social, cooperative and other not-for-profit housing
solutions, and meet the real housing needs of seniors and people with
disabilities. Current federal initiatives are stop-gap measures only and do
not contribute to long-term solutions to the housing crisis in Canada. This
bill brings all levels of government together to ensure that the cost of
housing in Canada does not compromise an individual's ability to meet other
basic needs including food and clothing.
