Hello everyone,

Last Friday, our members determined the policies and approaches to include in the formal Alliance to End Homelessness submission to Ontario Government’s Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy.  The next step will be crafting theses policies and approaches where we now have consensus into a formal submission document and we’ll send out that final public piece by Oct 14th. 

But . . . if you are going to MPPs Madeleine Meilleur and Philip McNeely’s joint bilingual affordable housing consultation tomorrow evening (Oct 1st), you are very welcome to print these points and make use of them at that consultation or in your own written or online submission to the consultation if they are helpful to you. 

The Thursday consultation starts at 6 pm, at the new Montfort School - 350 Den Haag St, Ottawa - Bus # 12 or bus 129 which will bring you closer to the venue; for more information or for accommodation relating to childcare, transportation or disability, people should  contact ‘Barra’ at 613 744 2892, ext. 1059.

Ottawa prendra la parole le 1er octobre, à la consultation publique pour le logement abordable avec L’honorable Madeleine Meilleur, Députée d’Ottawa-Vanier et Ministre des Services sociaux et communautaires, ainsi que Ministre déléguée aux Affaires francophones.  Également présent sera M. Phil McNeely, Député d’Ottawa-Orléans lors d’une consultation publique bilingue sur la stratégie ontarienne à long terme de logement abordable. 

(Ottawa) Les membres de la communauté, les fournisseurs de logement sans but lucratif, et les défenseurs des sans-abri pourront s’exprimer sur la crise du logement abordable dans le cadre d’une consultation populaire qui aura lieu à  l’école élémentaire Montfort située au 350 rue Den Haag, (la nouvelle école, près de la Cité Collégiale) de 18H00 à 20H00 le jeudi 1er octobre prochain.  

Les citoyens ∕ennes qui ont des solutions à proposer pour résoudre la crise du logement abordable sont invités ∕ées à partager leurs idées et leurs  besoins avec les élus provinciaux, L’honorable Madeleine Meilleur, Députée d’Ottawa-Vanier Ministre des Services sociaux et communautaires, ainsi que Ministre déléguée aux Affaires francophones avec M. Phil McNeely, Député d’Ottawa-Orléans. Les résidents d’Ottawa feront prévaloir le droit de toutes les personnes en Ontario de vivre à l’abri de la pauvreté et avec dignité dans un logement qui est stable, adéquat, équitablement accessible et abordable. 

De 17h30 à 18h00, les animatrices de la consultation seront disponibles pour rencontrer les médias à l’entrée de l’école Montfort.

Mme Hélène Ménard accueille avec enthousiasme le processus de consultation sur le logement abordable “ Il est temps de responsabiliser tout les paliers du gouvernement !  Il faut donner de l’espoir à ceux dont les besoins sont les plus criants – les sans-abri, les individus et familles à faible revenu, les personnes qui souffrent de maladies ou de handicaps et qui ne peuvent se loger au prix du marché » En 2008 à Ottawa, il y avait 9,692 foyers sur la liste d’attente pour un logement social. La période d’attente habituelle est de 7 à 10 ans pour un logement subventionné. Nous devons faire mieux !

Ottawa takes a stand for affordable housing with the Honorable Madeleine Meilleur, MPP for Ottawa-Vanier and Minister of Community and Social Services as well as Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs.  With her will be Phil McNeely, MPP for Ottawa-Orléans, at a bilingual public consultation on the Long-term Affordable Housing Strategy in Ontario on October 1st. 

(Ottawa) Community members, local housing and homelessness advocates will voice their opinions about the crisis in affordable housing at the (new) Montfort School – 350 Den Haag St. from 6:00pm to 8pm on October 1st. 

Constituents with real solutions for people struggling with housing issues have been invited to share their ideas with their provincial representatives, the Hon. Madeleine Meilleur, MPP for Ottawa-Vanier and Minister of Community and Social Services as well as Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs.  With her will be Phil McNeely, MPP for Ottawa-Orléans. Constituents will voice their key message - that everyone in Ottawa has the right to live poverty-free and with dignity, in housing that is stable, adequate, equitably accessible and affordable.

Karen Sexsmith, Managing Director of the Co-operative Housing Association of Eastern Ontario welcomed the consultation process. “We call on leadership from the Province to recognize that affordable housing is a priority in the fight to reduce poverty. People on low-income cannot afford housing on the open market.  In 2008, 9 692 households were on the waiting list for social housing in Ottawa. As a community, we can do a lot better.”
