Shelter's ploy 'raises' awareness of homelessness

A man who runs a Regina shelter has found a novel way to elevate the public
debate around what he's calling the largely hidden problem of homelessness
in the city.

For the next five days, Donavon Carroll will be living more than 10 metres
above solid ground on a scissor lift placed at the corner of Albert Street
and Saskatchewan Drive.

Carroll, the operations director for the Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, said
he's hoping the public spectacle reminds people that homelessness and life
on the street is the daily reality for some in the city.

He said Souls Harbour's 84 shelter beds are full every night.

In a smaller Canadian centre like Regina, the issues homeless people face
often fly under the radar, Carroll said.

"We're not a big centre like Toronto or Vancouver where it's really
prevalent, you can see it every day," Carroll said. " You don't see it here
but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist."

He will be accepting donations for the shelter throughout his five-day-long
stint, but Carroll said he also hopes the sky-high spectacle makes people
stop and think.

Carroll's feet are due to be back on the street, so to speak, at 1 p.m. CST
Friday.
