This week, journalist Meg Wilcox discusses her reasons for getting
involved in the homelessness community through the Ask Me Campaign.

"As a journalist, I've seen the circumstances in which many homeless
people live and spoken to those who live that reality. But equally
relevant to this discussion is the people working to help. From my
chats with front-line workers, they're working long hours on minimal
funding to try and maintain basic levels of human rights and human
dignity for a sector of society that many would largely prefer to
ignore.
A few years ago, I interviewed a man who had just been provided an
apartment through the John Howard Society in Kamloops. I remember
looking around the modestly furnished apartment — mostly secondhand
donations — and noticing his carefully-placed Christmas decorations.
But what I will never forget is how he told me that, when he moved in,
he spent the first two days crying because he didn’t think he deserved
such a nice apartment of his own.
I care because I hope that, were I in the same situation, I would be
treated with the same dignity, respect and consideration that these
organizations serve our most vulnerable people." Read the rest of the
