Subject: Follow-up - UW AGM - meeting tomorrow

Dear community members seeking to improve United Way Ottawa,

Next meeting: tomorrow, Thursday, June 23rd, 12:00 noon, 1 Community Place
(312 Parkdale)

Last night nearly 500 people gathered at the United Way AGM in contrast to
the 20 people who attended in the previous year. The groundswell of concern
about the issues that members of the community have been raising was evident
by both the large number of community agency people present, and United Way
staff and their families in attendance. During the discussion of the
motion that Ottawa Community Action presented (see attached,
English-French), Lawrence Greenspon, chair of the United Way Community
Services Cabinet, put forth an amendment which was in the form of a new
motion (see attached, English only). Through a series of very close votes,
United Way's alternate motion was approved.

In many ways, the concerns of our coalition were heard. The approved motion
does address many of the concerns in the motion put forth by the Ottawa
Community Action. But, the official United Way Ottawa motion falls short of
what we wanted. It quietly dropped the request for an open review of monies
being spent internally and doesn't address the growing concern that UWO is
positioning itself as a direct service provider, rather than a broad-based
funder.

It is very clear to everyone that the United Way Ottawa has some major trust
rebuilding ahead of it, and we hope to contribute to that.

Media coverage last night and today has been extensive and overall
responsive to our concerns. See links below. Please consider writing a
letter to the editor to express your own views. See OCA press release
attached.

All interested are invited to attend the follow up meeting of Ottawa
Community Action, tomorrow, Thursday, June 23rd, 12:00, 1 Community Place

(312 Parkdale). At this meeting, we will determine the best way to go
forward so as to foster a collaborative community-United Way relationship
that will strengthen United Way.

Thank you for your contribution to making United Way Ottawa more effective.

Let's all put the community back into United Way Ottawa!
