PLEASE CIRCULATE WIDELY
Oct. 6th is Election Day and today the Alliance to End Homelessness held a press conference to share answers from Ottawa's provincial candidates to its 5 election questions. Attached is the Alliance statement which includes a chart with the answers by riding (pg 3) -----
· Eighteen of the 24 candidates responded directly with questionnaire answers, a 75% return rate. All six of the Liberal and NDP candidates replied as did five Green candidates. The Alliance was also sent a statement by email from the person handling the Progressive Conservatives Stakeholder Relations; for these purposes an assumption was made that Randal Denley asked that it be sent as he was the only local candidate who was copied on this. A welcome but unsolicited reply was received from the Liberal candidate in Glengarry Prescott Russell, but not included it in this tally.
· There was particular interest in the recently signed Investment in Affordable Housing (AIH) agreement, the four-year funding federal/provincial agreement to continue investment in affordable housing in this province. The province agreed to spend $240.3M over the next four years (the federal/provincial total for Ontario is $480.6M). Previously, between 2005 and 2010, the City of Ottawa was allocated $75.6M under the Affordable Housing Program (AHP) which created about 1,240 new units.
ð Ottawa could see over the next 4 years a total of about $33.6 M or 7% of the $480.6 million federal/provincial total if the funds for new affordable housing are allocated by population. It's quite a contrast to the last agreement.
ð In Ottawa, on average, the previous federal/provincial allocation under AHP was $15M per year.
ð It is likely to drop down nearly 44% --- to $8.4M per year for Ottawa under this new AIH agreement.
