CHRA Celebrates Its Members

Today, on National Housing Day, CHRA celebrates its members; those who work tirelessly to provide affordable housing and those who work with our most vulnerable to ensure they can access housing and needed supports.

As today recognizes the critical role that decent, affordable housing has on individuals, families, communities and Canada as a whole, we celebrate what has been accomplished but we recognize that much more needs to be done:

1.5 million households in Canada cannot access a decent home that is affordable to them. 

Between 150,000 and 300,000 Canadians have no place to call home.

At the same time, federal funding for social housing is declining:

In 2011, 604,200 households were supported in social housing.  In 2012, only 597,800 households are being supported.  That’s 6400 fewer families! 

In the next 8 years, we will lose $500 million in federal funding for social housing.

To improve the housing situation of Canadians, CHRA is calling on the federal government to act on  <http://chra-achru.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=198979fc27672dbfc65fa7c28&id=1719297d69&e=7d909061b1> these four recommendations.

And we are calling on you – affordable housing advocates across the country - to help us communicate these recommendations to decision-makers.  Consider participating in the  <http://chra-achru.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=198979fc27672dbfc65fa7c28&id=a4b5a95527&e=7d909061b1> CHRA Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day.

We are also working to bring critical information to housing providers through technical assistance  <http://chra-achru.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=198979fc27672dbfc65fa7c28&id=482f9d1202&e=7d909061b1> this new assessment tool. It is designed to help housing providers understand the impact of the end of federal funding.
