Hi everyone,

In the spirit of honouring, and celebrating, the contributions of those in our sector, this email shares well-deserved recognition recently given to two long-time committed community builders – and founding members of the Alliance to End Homelessness – Sheila Burnett and Diane Morrison. Thanks to Connie Woloschuk for sharing this. As Connie writes, “….they both know how to serve this community with unswerving commitment and passion.......role models for all who aspire to make a difference!”

An excerpt:

“One day they will want to build her a statue or put her name on a building or hand her the world’s biggest plaque. And she will detest this, and scowl, just as she does not like interviews or awards or any suggestion that, in saintly fashion, she built the Shepherds into the largest organization of its kind in Ottawa.”

Diane Morrison - a link to a newspaper article about Diane’s investiture in the Order of Canada:

Excerpt from Governor General’s press release:

Diane Morrison, C.M.

Ottawa, Ontario

Diane Morrison has revolutionized the care provided to marginalized citizens in her community. As the executive director of the Ottawa Mission, an organization that provides food and shelter to homeless men, she dramatically increased the scope of available inner-city services. Over two decades, she founded a learning centre, a six-month residential drug rehabilitation centre, and an on-site dental clinic, and initiated a palliative care unit linked to the shelter, the first of its kind in North America. Her innovation and dedication have made her a pillar in city-wide efforts to alleviate hardship for disadvantaged citizens.
