Information and tip sheets from ISAC and ACTO follows about the changes to
OW and ODSP.  As far as housing goes, the Community Start-Up and Maintenance
Benefit has been replaced by the Housing Benefits Allowance.  Essentially,
the process remains the same.  The maximum benefits are $799 for individuals
and $1,500 for families.  The requests can still be made two years after the
previous allowance was received.  People on OW and ODSP should make the
requests through their workers, and others should contact the general intake
line at 613-560-6000.  Our concern is that, with less money available due to
cutbacks, there will be less funds for discretionary assistance or
extraordinary circumstances, which could still lead to people becoming
homeless.

On December 27, 2012, the provincial government announced $42 million in
one-time funding for local housing and homelessness initiatives.

What does this announcement mean? How will it affect people receiving social
assistance? 

A new update from ISAC and ACTO explains the announcement and how it relates
to the loss of CSUMB.

It explains that, even with the additional $42 million for 2013-14, the
elimination of CSUMB and the transfer of half the funds to municipal
administration are a major change in social assistance policy.

It gives information on six negative impacts that people on social
assistance will face as a result.

The update also outlines four steps you can take to respond to this major
change.
