There's still time to register! The Canadian Mental Health Association's (CMHA) national conference , "Changing Perspectives...Addressing the Social Determinants of Mental Health and Addictions," hosted by CMHA Ottawa, will be held at the Delta Ottawa City Centre Hotel on October 17th and 18th, with specialized institutes on October 16th.
In the concurrent sessions there is a housing stream An overview of conference keynotes, concurrent sessions and institutes can be found on the conference website.  http://conference.cmha.ca/about-the-conference/overview/.
On Friday morning there are two housing related keynotes: , "Why housing is essential for health" by Dr. Sam Tsemberis; followed by a panel on "At Home/Chez Soi Research Initiative: Shifting the mental health and housing paradigm", chaired by Dr. Tim Aubry.

Morning Keynote: "Why housing is essential for health:  Dr. Sam Tsemberis
Dr. Sam Tsemberis founded Pathways to Housing, based on the belief that housing is a basic right for all. He currently serves as the CEO of Pathways, where he developed the Housing First model that provides immediate access to permanent supported housing; independent apartments and intensive treatment and support services for individuals who are homeless and who have psychiatric disabilities and substance use disorders. Dr. Tsemberis is a clinical-community psychologist and serves on the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center in NYC.

PANEL: "At Home/Chez Soi Research Initiative: Shifting the mental health and housing paradigm"
Panel Members:
Ms. Corinne Isaak, MSc.
Ms. Isaak is a Research Associate and Co-Investigator with the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Research Group in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. She currently coordinates several research projects, in the areas of Aboriginal Suicide and Mental Health and Homelessness. In conjunction with the Swampy Cree Suicide Prevention Project she led a group of research staff in conducting more than 130 qualitative interviews with members of the eight Swampy Cree First Nations communities. She also played a key role in developing a randomized controlled pilot study to test two suicide prevention/intervention methods.
Eric Latimer:
A health economist by training, Eric Latimer, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University, Research Scientist at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, and the current holder of the J. Armand Bombardier Fellowship in the Quality of Mental Health Care. He has been working in the area of evidence-based practices for people with severe mental illness for nearly 20 years. He conducted the first trial of IPS outside the United States in the early 2000s, and has led or contributed to studies of supported employment in the UK, the United States and Canada. Currently he is the lead investigator for the Montreal site of the pan-Canadian At Home/Chez Soi research and demonstration study of Housing First, which includes a trial of IPS for recently homeless people who have recently been housed and are receiving Intensive Case Management services. He is also the lead economist on the national research team for that project.
Claudette Bradshaw, MHCC At Home/Chez Soi Moncton Site Coordinator
Claudette Bradshaw is known for her warm personality, strength of character, and generous hugs. During her career she has championed numerous social, economic and health issues that have left a profound impact on Moncton, the Province of New Brunswick, and Canada.
Bradshaw's career started in 1968 with the Boys and Girls Club, where she learned about poverty, abuse, parents, and the system, and where she met her husband, Douglas. Her involvement with the Boys and Girls Club led to her founding the Moncton Headstart Program in 1974. The agency continues to offer education and support services to low-income families, and is a tribute to her hard work during the years.
This organization has led to other efforts in the area, including programs for at-risk youth, the Mapleton Teaching Kitchen, Future Horizons Social Housing, and Headstart Recycles.
Bradshaw used her experience and talent to serve in the Parliament of Canada as an elected member for Moncton from 1997-2005. During that time she occupied several seats in cabinet, being minister responsible for La Francophonie, minister of labour, and minister for co-coordinating services on homelessness in Canada.
After retiring from the House of Commons, Bradshaw continued her work in social causes by becoming the co-coordinator for the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and pursuing projects exploring homeless persons with chronic mental health issues.
PANEL CHAIR:
Tim Aubry, Ph.D., C.Psych. is a Full Professor in the School of Psychology and Co-Director and Senior Researcher at the Centre for Research on Educational and Community Services at the University of Ottawa. He is currently holder of the Faculty of Social Sciences Research Chair in Community Mental Health and Homelessness. Over the course of his career, Tim has collaborated on research projects with community organizations and government at all levels, contributing to the development of effective social programs and policies. He is currently a Member of the National Research Team and the Co-Lead of the Moncton site in the multi-site Mental Health and Homelessness Demonstration Project of the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Tim teaches graduate courses at the University of Ottawa in community psychology and program evaluation.
