Subject: follow-up: looking for food bank/meal program/shelter staff and
volunteers for Oct 17 event
Date: Thu, 12 Sep 2013 14:00:21 -0400
October 17 is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, and
Dignity for All: the campaign for a poverty-free Canada is asking food
bank, meal program, and shelter workers/volunteers to add their voice
and unique experiences to a call for a national poverty elimination
strategy.
In Canada, 882,000 people rely on food banks each month, and 1.6 million
households experienced food security in 2011. The Senate (2009), the
House of Commons (2010), and the United Nations (2009 & 2012), have all
called for Canada to adopt a national poverty elimination strategy, but
there has been no action (and little media pick up).
So here’s the invitation:
Where: Downtown Ottawa location(s) – including Parliament Hill
When: October 17, 2013. 11:30 am – 1:30 pm
What: We will be handing out lunch bags to passers-by and politicians
with the words “Chew on this” printed on the outside, and an apple and a
postcard on the inside. The postcard will have similar stats/info to the
bolded paragraph above, and an option to sign and send it to parliament
as a call for a national poverty elimination strategy.
Who: We want your staff and volunteers—from the sweet retired church
ladies to the fiery students, and everyone in between. Experience
handing out bagged lunches is an asset. J
RSVP: Please have a representative from each organization sign up here
so we can gauge numbers, assign sites, and send out final details closer
to the date!
This event will be one of several similar events across Canada. We would
love to see something like this in the evening news: “On the
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, food bank volunteers
from across the country are stepping back from the lunch lines to serve
up some food for thought.” We hope you can make it out!
Dignity for All: the campaign for a poverty-free Canada is a multi-year,
non-partisan campaign supported by over 10,000 individuals and 600 local
and national organizations calling for a comprehensive federal plan to
eliminate poverty.
