Subject: [homeles_ot-l] Setting up a community space in Heatherington-Herongate

Good afternoon,

Heatherington Land Trust would like to put the call out to agencies and actors for help in setting up a community base in the Heatherington-Herongate area.

There are two commercial spots available at 1574 Walkley Rd. We have already been to check these spots out and believe they could act as a community base. Although the 2nd floor unit is not accessible (there are no elevators) it is a large open space that could be used for community organizing, arts, culture and youth activities, for example. The landlord is RESCOM, who have only owned it for a year.

1) Ground floor 1,172 sq ft with one washroom $3,187.29/month + hydro and heat

2) Second floor 3,135 sq ft with public and private washrooms $5,857.02/month + hydro

We imagine these figures would be open to negotiation as our groups are all non-profit, especially if we focus on corporate social responsibility. This could be the beginning of Ottawa South’s very own Heartwood House!

Our area is facing unprecedented levels of displacement, rent increases and hidden homelessness. One landlord owns an entire neighbourhood of 5,000 people. After years of running Herongate into the ground they have already begun raising rents above the guideline, evicting low-income families and demolishing people’s homes. Just two years ago, 80 townhomes were demolished and hundreds of low-income people were displaced.

Meanwhile, in the most recent version of the City’s Building Better Revitalized Neighbourhood report, there is no mention of a guarantee of affordable housing–it’s nowhere to be found in their priorities or their Action Plan.

We need to ensure not one more family loses their home and that whatever housing is built remains affordable for the people who actually live in the area.

Sincerely,

Josh Hawley
