Hi Folks,
What's that saying - "There's nothing new under the sun"? That certainly applies to the feds' "new" National Poverty Strategy. As I had predicted, it's an amalgam of existing programs cobbled together and put in one document. Importantly, there's no new money. It also sets the base as 2015 so they can roll in things like the changes to the Child Benefit and the Guaranteed Income Supplement and apply any gains they made there to their five-year performance.
It certainly isn't what most of us in the anti-poverty community were looking for. I was at several consultations leading up to this underwhelming release and I don't recall anyone saying "Keep on doing what you're doing and call it a Strategy". Bearing in mind that 2019 is an election year, maybe we can look for some new initiatives and funding then but I'm not holding my breath.
Linda.

Here's Duclos' comments on the release:

“Life is an adventure of passion, risk, danger, laughter, beauty, love; a burning curiosity to go with the action to see what it is all about, to go search for a pattern of meaning, to burn one's bridges because you're never going to go back anyway, and to live to the end.” Saul Alinsky
