Hello Community Partners:

The Home Takeover’s project steering committee met on April 24. Several partners noted their concern that they are seeing increases in home takeovers since the beginning of the stay at home rules. In order to protect our most vulnerable and marginalized clients we would like to share some suggestions:

  * Join us for an informal training session to learn from the experience of frontline workers who have been dealing with home takeovers since the beginning of the COVID 19 shut down. The session will take place Friday, May 8, 11am-noon on Zoom. Please register to participate.<https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZArcOihpjgqGteKrQ56b-_xndABRYHQ6S_N>

  * If you are doing check in calls with your clients:
     * Consider adding some questions to explore whether they may be experiencing a home takeover.
     * Make sure that your clients are aware that the Ottawa Police Service and Ottawa Community Housing security services are still answering calls and will assist in emergencies. There seems to be some confusion in the community, we need to reassure clients that emergency services still are available.

  * Consult the training and information resources available on the CPO Website.<https://www.crimepreventionottawa.ca/cpo-initiatives/home-takeovers/>

  * If you have clients that are out of touch because they lack any technology, you might want to consider how to access technology for them. Some agencies have done bulk purchases of service. Others are accessing $1 a month devices for their clients through Ruckify<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fruckify.com%2Fruckifystore%2Fca%2Fon%2Fottawa%2Funited-way-donations%2F89765c70-71d1-11ea-bdc9-8d96b0f2af45&data=02%7C01%7CNancy.Worsfold%40ottawa.ca%7Ca44b201d9e4942c8c81608d7eba11f1d%7Cdfcc033ddf874c6ea1b88eaa73f1b72e%7C0%7C0%7C637236949561999195&sdata=hR6WdtmwIVg2eA6i2RNJR8Jb8kT8pH8pCdF4%2FX4d%2FP4%3D&reserved=0>. For information contact Jayme, jragonald at ruckify.com<mailto:jragonald at ruckify.com>.

  * Ottawa Community Housing has installed call boxes in some of their buildings which house vulnerable clients. This is an option that other landlords, social landlords and other, might want to consider.

Please feel free to forward this email to anyone who might be concerned about home takeovers.

Take care and stay healthy,
Nancy
