[BCMA] Last call for participants: UBC Study

Hello – my name is Ava Prosser, and I am a UBC Master of Museum Education graduate student.

I am conducting the UBC study, The Lived Experience of Museum Educators as Social Justice Advocates. I will be investigating the experience of museum educators as they enact social advocacy in their teaching practice. Museums include informal learning sites such as, museums, science centres, art galleries, parks, and heritage sites.  For this study, social justice advocacy will be defined as the explicit intent, shaped by ethically informed values to act upon inequalities, injustices, and environmental crises and bring about political, social, educational and environmental change through well-crafted learning encounters.

The findings will lead to a better understanding of how educators incorporate social justice advocacy in museum teaching and may serve as inspiration for other museum educators to bring discussions of social justice issues into their pedagogy.

I am inviting museum educators (paid staff or volunteer), over 18 years of age, who self-identify as bringing social justice advocacy into their museum practice to join this study.

If you chose to join, you would participate in a 60-minute audio-recorded interview over Zoom about your experience as a social justice advocate. I will also ask you to review my initial analysis of your interview to ensure that my interpretations reflect your experience. This review should take approximately 30 minutes.

Your contact information and responses will be kept confidential, and your name will not be used in any publications related to the research. We do not anticipate that there will be any risks to participating in this research project and you may benefit by having the chance to reflect on your practice as a museum educator.

The results of this study will be reported in a graduate capstone paper and may also be published in journal articles and books. Please let me know by email if you would like a PDF copy, whether you participate in the study or not.
