*Golden Museum Receives Federal Funding to Reorganize Archival Collections*

*Golden, BC — July 2026* The Golden Museum and Archives is pleased to
announce that it has received funding from *Canadian Heritage* through
the *Museums
Assistance Program (MAP)* to undertake a major reorganization of its
archival collections.

This project addresses decades of accumulated materials in the museum’s
archival vault — a 10‑by‑10‑foot space housing thousands of photographs,
maps, and documents that tell the story of Golden and the surrounding
Columbia Valley. Limited archival funding over the past 30 years has left
many items without accession numbers, condition notes, or proper
conservation plans. The MAP grant will allow the museum to systematically
catalogue, assess, and rehouse these materials to ensure their long‑term
preservation and accessibility.

Under the guidance of the museum’s Archivist and with support from a
contracted staff member and a retired professional archivist, the project
will:

   -

Assign accession numbers and detailed descriptions to uncatalogued items
   -

Record condition assessments and identify materials requiring
   conservation
   -

Group like materials together for easier access
   -

Rehouse items in acid‑free boxes, folders, and envelopes
   -

Identify hazardous materials such as nitrate negatives
   -

Flag fragile items for future digitization

The reorganization will temporarily close the Golden Museum Archive to the
public while staff complete this essential work. During this period,
research enquiries will continue to be handled by museum staff, though
response times may be slower than usual.

“This project is a vital step toward safeguarding our community’s history,”
said the museum’s leadership team. “By improving the organization and
accessibility of our archives, we’re ensuring that researchers, students,
and residents can continue to explore Golden’s rich heritage for
generations to come.”

The Golden Museum extends its gratitude to *Canadian Heritage* for
supporting this initiative through the *Museums Assistance Program*, which
helps institutions across Canada preserve and share the stories that shape
our collective identity.
