The Nova Scotia Nature Trust is a non-profit, non-
governmental organization. Our mandate is to protect 
critical and threatened natural habitats, native biodiversity, 
ecological integrity, and natural ecosystems on private 
lands in Nova Scotia through formal land securement, 
stewardship and education. Since our inception in 1994, 
the Nova Scotia Nature Trust has taken a leadership role in 
the recovery of endangered wildlife and their habitat.

The Nature Trust is looking for 2-3 dynamic and 
enthusiastic Conservation Project Assistants to work in our 
established endangered species conservation programs. The 
Assistants will be involved in multiple facets of the projects 
and will work with various stakeholders, including 
landowners, recreational land users, community groups, 
funders, academics, and Species at Risk Recovery Team 
scientists. The Project Assistants will report directly to 
the Nature Trust's Land Securement Coordinator. These 
positions may include 2.5 days per week in the field, 
including some evenings and weekends, from mid-July 
to mid-September.

Duties:

Successful applicants will work as part of a team that will 
be collectively responsible for the duties listed below. We 
do not anticipate that any one individual will carry out the 
full range of duties -- it is the applicant's responsibility to 
identify her or his skill set and how it best fits into the 
listed project activities.

Project Administration:
*support project management where appropriate; including 
budget tracking, preparation of funding applications and 
reports, coordination of photo library, and management of 
project filing system.

Public Relations:
*coordinate Guided Walks and on-site celebrations 
scheduled for summer 2006, including preparation of 
correspondence, advertisements, liaison with media and 
partner organizations, and participation in celebrations.

Outreach:
*represent the Nature Trust at landowner meetings and 
local community groups to discuss the importance of 
specific at-risk species and habitats, share information, and 
demonstrate how individual actions and changes in attitude 
can help to mitigate human threats to species and habitats
*conduct follow-up to landowner meetings, including 
preparation of correspondence, preparation of stewardship 
agreements, telephone communications, and recording 
information from meetings in the Nature Trust's landowner 
database
*coordinate volunteer monitoring programs including 
maintenance of communication with all current volunteer 
monitors, recruitment of new monitors, assistance with 
training, and collation of related data
*assist with the expansion and production of a rare plant 
guide and children's activity material.

Land Securement & Field Work:
*carry out ecological field assessments of priority 
properties including species identification and inventory, 
and habitat assessments
*assist the Land Securement Coordinator with 
interpretation of map, air photo and file data for properties 
considered for permanent securement
*prepare and produce property maps including maps 
required for legal documentation
*assist with the preparation of baseline studies, baseline 
reports, and stewardship plans for Nature Trust 
Conservation Lands
*carry out backwoods navigation and travel including use 
of map and compass, and aerial photo interpretation
*conduct field mapping using a GPS.

Requirements:
*Post-secondary studies in Biology, Environmental 
Science, or Environmental Studies (or equivalent 
experience)
*Experience working or volunteering with non-profit 
organizations (especially with an environment or 
conservation focus)
*Clean and valid drivers license and willingness to travel 
within NS -- average of 2.5 days/week in July and August 
(vehicle will be provided; however, you must be eligible to 
rent vehicles through the Nature Trust corporate account)
*Strong working knowledge of computer software 
applications including Microsoft Office and database 
management (or the demonstrated ability to learn) -- 
experience with PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop and 
ArcView would be an asset
*Strong written and oral communication skills (including 
telephone) are essential
*Strong ability to work independently and to be an 
effective team member
*For fieldstaff only, comfort with backwoods 
navigation/travel in remote wilderness terrain
*For fieldstaff only, solid botanical inventory experience
*Enthusiasm and passion for conservation education
*Flexibility to deal with a range of work activities and 
unforeseen circumstances
*One of the available positions is through the Science 
Horizons Internship Program, which has specific eligibility 
requirements as part of the Government of Canada's Youth 
Employment Strategy.

Terms: $8.50-12.00/hr, 35 hrs/week, from May to September, 
with the possibility of extension for one position
