December 10th is International Human Rights Day and the Students Coalition
Against War - SCAW in partnership with Amnesty International will be hosting
a World Cafe discussion on the state of human rights in Canada and abroad.
The purpose of the Cafe is to get people from various groups talking about
Canada's stance on human rights in Canada and around the world. The Cafe
will feature eight roundtables, with each table focusing on a different
aspect/issue of human rights and moderated by a different person(s) from a
locale organization whose work focuses on such issues. These include such
issues as poverty and homelessness, Immigration and immigrant issues, gender
and women's rights, indigenous rights, race and racism in modern Canada, and
the influence of globalization on Canada's stance on human rights.
Moderators come from such organizations as the Black Students Law
Association, Shunpiking Magazine, The Halifax Coalition Against Poverty and
the Dalhousie Women's Centre to name a few. Participants will spend 20
minutes at four tables of their choice engaging, in what we hope will be
stimulating and eye-opening conversations on various human rights issues
within Canada. In closing we will collectively and briefly examine the
reoccurring themes/ issues from each table, while SCAW will be publishing
the results of the Cafe in a zine for wide distribution in the new year. It
is your opinions and your voice that are required to make this an inclusive
and effective discussion on human rights in Canada.
If you have any questions/concerns regarding the World Cafe structure or
format, or if you require any further information on participants please
contact SCAW at; scaw at riseup.net or visit www.scaw.ca for more information.
We hope to see you there!
