Carpenters Hit the Streets to Raise Awareness
HCAP calls on all members and supporters to stand in solidarity with the
Carpenter's Union in their fight against developers and contractors who
refuse to hire union.
When: Friday, December 15th - 7:00am-9:00am
Where: Lawen Building - 2571 Robie Street at Willow St, Halifax, NS
What: A picket against Dexel Developments, a developer that hires
non-union contractors
$10.00 per hour is available to those who attend.
Please call HCAP to confirm your attendance if possible. 444.5060
Background:
The purpose of this information picket is to inform the public that many
carpenters in Nova Scotia are receiving less than union wages and benefits.
The Carpenters Union has been monitoring pay and benefit rates over the past
number of years and has noticed on most occasions that the non-union
contractors are paying less than union rates and benefits to their workers,
sometimes significantly less. This flies in the face of the longstanding
tradition in our community of a fair day's pay for a fair day's work.
The information picket hopes to make our community aware that Nova Scotia
has been built over the decades by the hard work of the carpenters who live
here. From the waterfront, along the railroad and the high-rise construction
projects, the working people of our community, and fair-minded employers,
have made this a good place to work, live and raise families. A strong union
tradition has assured that workers enjoy a reasonable share of the
prosperity. Many of the conditions of employment enjoyed on construction
jobs today are the result of hard work of the building trade unions of the
past. But now, some developers and employers are undermining the union
standard of wages and benefits that have been achieved through decades of
successful collective bargaining.

ARCH marks the 9th International Animal Rights Day!

unnecessarily tortured and killed every year worldwide for human use.
