full-time position:

Survey Analyst Contract

Active & Safe Routes to School program

Ecology Action Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia


ORGANIZATION


The Ecology Action Centre, established in 1971, is Nova Scotia's largest and 
most active environmental organization. We work on sustainable 
transportation, marine and coastal issues, wilderness issues, urban issues, 
sustainable food production and alternative energy.


A program of the Transportation Issues Committee, Active & Safe Routes to 
School (ASRTS) encourages active, non-motorized forms of transportation to 
school, such as walking and cycling. The Making Tracks project will make 
ASRTS more effective and increase the use of active transportation in 
schools. Using a community-based social marketing approach, it will research 
the barriers to the use of active transportation to school, redevelop the 
program and test it in pilot schools. The contract position will oversee the 
survey research component of the project.

RESPONSIBILITIES

-Report to and work with the Active & Safe Routes to School Coordinator

-Input survey data from roughly 300 surveys and analyze using logistical 
regression

-Translate results from statistical analysis into a summary and use graphs 
to display results

-Comment on statistical analysis as it relates to barriers and benefits 
research

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS REQUIRED

-Project management experience and ability to work independently

-Education and background in statistics

-Experience in survey analysis

-Working knowledge and experience in using SPSS for multiple regressions

-Ability to translate statistical analysis

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Short-term contract during the month of April (roughly 50 hours of work @ 
$25/hr)

Making Tracks Project Coordinator

Active & Safe Routes to School program

ORGANIZATION

transportation, marine and coastal issues, wilderness issues, urban issues, 
sustainable food production and alternative energy.

The Making Tracks project will make Active & Safe Routes to School more 
effective and increase the use of active transportation among students in 
pilot schools. Using a community-based social marketing (CBSM) approach, 
Making Tracks will redevelop the ASRTS program based on barrier and benefits 
research conducted earlier this year. Once redeveloped to reflect research 
and incorporate CBSM tools, it will be tested in pilot schools across the 
province.

RESPONSIBILITIES

-Participate in and support the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre

-Revise the ASRTS program to reflect research and incorporate CBSM tools

-Redevelop school manual, communications and promotional materials

-Establish pilot school teams, meet regularly and provide ongoing support

-Assist teams with travel surveys, special events and safety education

-Conduct program evaluation, final reporting and recommendations

-Report to and work with the Active & Safe Routes to School Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS REQUIRED

-Experience working in nonprofit, volunteer-driven organizations an asset

-Ability to lead and work effectively with school teams (staff, parents, 
students)

-Knowledge of and engages in active and sustainable transportation

-Experience in environmental education design, implementation and evaluation

-Experience and/or training in community-based social marketing

-Strong public speaking, writing and project management skills

-Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, internet and email

-Available some evenings, weekends and willing to travel within NS

-Holds a valid Nova Scotia driver's license

-Preference will be given to candidates with a degree and/or relevant 
experience in the fields of environmental studies, education, health, 
recreation or other related fields

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Full-time (35 hours per week) @ $18.00/hr (mid-April to Mar. 30, 2007)
