Of the Ancestors
Archaeology, Burial Grounds and Aboriginal Peoples
A day with the Aboriginal Rights Coalition ¡V Atlantic
  at Tatamagouche Centre
  Saturday May 20, 2006 10am to 4pm

Under our feet are the remains of peoples who have lived here ever since the glaciers receded northward ¡V more than 12,000 years ago. These people were the ancestors of the Mi¡¦kmaq, Maliseet and Passamaquoddy. Their artefacts are of interest to those who seek understanding of the present from the lives of the past, including archaeologists and historians. Today, some land owners are learning that ancient burial grounds or sites of interest lie on their properties. Should these sites be disturbed? Do they differ from modern cemeteries? Are there laws that protect these ancient remains? What can Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people learn together from this, so that we will develop respectful and right relationships?

At this gathering, we bring together Thunderbird Turtle Woman (Donna Augustine) of Elsipogtog (Big Cove First Nation, NB), speaking of her experiences worldwide, protecting Native burial grounds and returning artefacts from museums back to their communities; Ed Bianchi, Aboriginal Rights Staffperson for the Canadian justice coalition, Kairos, from Ottawa, bringing a national and legal perspective; Ellen Hunt, Mi¡¦kmaq Elder and protector of the Ancestors, and Michael Eisnor, both of the Mi'kmaq Burial Grounds Research and Restoration Association of Mahone Bay, NS, sharing their experiences of the Indian Point Burial Ground. Also invited are Mi¡¦kmaq resource people, to speak about current archaeological projects underway in Nova Scotia.

This event is for people who want to hear various perspectives, learn about a particular unfolding issue that is of concern in our region, and find ways to develop understanding, peaceful partnerships and strategies for justice and actions, in response to what we have learned.

The Aboriginal Rights Coalition ¡V Atlantic (ARC-A) is the only cross-cultural Aboriginal justice organization in our region. It is made up of both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal members, and encourages dialogue and activities of peace and justice in this region. New people are very welcome!

As well, all are invited to the longer ARC-A meeting that will be taking place Friday 7pm to Sunday 4pm, May 19-21 at Tatamagouche Centre. This will include the Saturday event, plus ARC-A meeting time, ceremony and celebrations of good relations together.
