Job Posting: Education Project Coordinator
Deadline May 31, 2007

The Sierra Club of Canada – Atlantic Canada Chapter is a non-profit
environmental organization based out of Halifax NS. The Sierra Club of
Canada focuses on five overriding threats: loss of animal and plant species;
deterioration of the planet’s oceans and atmosphere; the ever-growing
presence of toxic chemicals in all living things; destruction of our
remaining wilderness; and spiraling population growth and over consumption.

Since 2003, the Atlantic Chapter has run education programs for the Atlantic
Provinces. Many students and teachers benefit from these programs which
focus on developing a sense of stewardship to their local environment. The
programs are all hands-on, interactive and are action-based. We provide them
in both French and English to schools through the Atlantic region. We reach
on average 6000 students a year.

With great anticipation, the Chapter is looking to fill our Education
Project Coordinator position. Below are the qualifications, responsibilities
and duties we require for the position. Due to the high volume of applicants
only those chosen for interviews will be contacted.

Qualifications:
o University degree or relevant experience in a field such as Biology,
Education, Recreation, Management, Environmental Studies/Science
o Experience in environmental education working directly with children and
youth
o Strong organizational and management skills
o Strong fundraising experience
o Strong communication skills
o Experience in program development and evaluation
o Being bilingual is not required but is highly recommended
o Access to a vehicle is an asset

Responsibilities and duties:
• Coordinate, develop and deliver environmental education programs for
elementary and high schools
• Fundraise to assist in the program development and delivery
• Register, book and schedule school visits
• Produce funder reports
• Meet regularly with youth groups and clubs
• Coordinate volunteers
• Manage finances and budgeting
• Handle all promotional and marketing materials
• Manage, hire and train all environmental education staff
• Contribute to and regularly update website.
• Conduct evaluations on programs

The Sierra Club of Canada – Atlantic Canada Chapter has just recently
received funding to spear-head a large-scale project called One Foot
Forward: An Eco-footprint Project. The successful candidate would help
coordinate, develop and pilot this project into its first year. This would
include working with other organizations, schools, teachers, school boards
and a youth steering committee to develop the program. The educational
component is called Eco-buddies which is a high school mentorship program
whereby older youth meet with elementary students to help calculate their
footprints while assisting in their action projects. The actions the
students come up with will directly help reduce not only their own
footprints but that of their schools as well.

The Education Program Coordinator position is an exciting job opportunity
that requires someone who is dedicated and passionate about environmental
education, out-going, creative, has the experience to run a multitude of
programs and is fiscally responsible. This position also requires someone
who has fundraising experience and loves to work with people.  This position
reports directly to the Chapter director and also works with a volunteer
advisory committee.
