Fundy Baykeeper Outreach Assistant

Conservation Council of New Brunswick News Release
Sept 29, 2007
Fundy Baykeeper Program Director
The Fundy Baykeeper Program is the Conservation Council's vehicle for
environmental advocacy and action along Bay of Fundy and in Fundy
communities between St. Martins and the Canada-US border. The Fundy
Baykeeper is the public's eyes and ears on the bay, advocating for its
protection and for enforcement of the laws meant to protect the bay from
pollution, habitat destruction and unsustainable resource exploitation.
The program employs a full-time Baykeeper, David Thompson, whose job it is
to track and respond to issues as they arise (sometimes in consultation
with CCNB's Policy Director David Coon), be a primary contact with
government enforcement agencies on those issues, and receive and respond to
"hotline" calls from concerned citizens. The Baykeeper participates in
public events , conducts media interviews, and carries out educational
activities as time permits.
In 2006, a strategic plan was developed for the Fundy Baykeeper Program
over the next five years. The Director of the program has the primary
responsibility to make sure the resources, infrastructure and staff support
are in place to achieve the vision laid out in that strategic plan. The
most immediate need is to develop and implement a capacity-building and
fundraising strategy which not only meets existing needs, but allows the
Program to more fully meet its mandate as laid out in the plan. In
addition, the Director will ensure the strategic plan is a living vision,
responding to changing circumstances and seizing opportunities as they arise.
The Director will manage the operations of the program, ensuring
commitments to funders are met, donor and public relations are healthy, and
that staff and/or volunteers are in place and supervised to handle daily,
weekly and monthly office and community outreach tasks. The Director
participates, with David Thompson, in the activities of Waterkeepers Canada
and the Waterkeeper Alliance as appropriate, and is the primary contact
person for those bodies.
The Director maintains and expands existing networks that are essential to
fulfilling the mandate of the program. These are conservation and
environmental, community leaders, First Nations, civil service, political ,
fisheries, media, scientific, academic, private foundations, and major donors.
The Director is skilled in media relations and will initiate and respond to
media contacts.
The Director is committed to and supportive of the mandate of the
Conservation Council of NB, participates in CCNB staff meetings, and works
with other major programs (forest conservation, climate change, environment
and health) and staff to ensure good communications and cooperation across
the organization. The Director attends and participates in CCNB Board and
Annual Meetings, as well as strategic planning or other special meetings of
CCNB.
Initially, this is a part-time position (15-20 hrs/wk) with the expectation
that the Director will secure the resources to expand it to full-time. The
position may be located in either Saint John or St. Andrews. Per hour rate
to be negotiated.

Conservation Council of New Brunswick News Release
September 29, 2007
Fundy Baykeeper Outreach Assistant
The Outreach Assistant is responsible for keeping the Fundy Baykeeper's
work in the public eye and building community support for and involvement
in the work of the Baykeeper. The OA knows and understands the issues the
Fundy Baykeeper is working on and communicates these to the public. The OA
also engages people in the various Fundy communities and encourages them to
volunteer as shoreline stewards or in other ways, and to join CCNB as a
Friend of Fundy Baykeeper.
The primary vehicles for this are the Fundy Baykeeper website (linked with
the CCNB main website), an electronic newsletter to supporters, and CCNB's
newsletter EcoAlert. The OA also participates in community events as
appropriate to provide information on the program and encourage involvement
in program activities.
The OA works under the direction of the Program Director and contributes to
achieving the goals and objectives set out in the Fundy Baykeeper strategic
plan.
In addition to enthusiastically supporting the mandate and work of the
Fundy Baykeeper, the OA supports the mission of the Conservation Council,
participates in CCNB staff meetings, and promotes the Fundy Baykeeper as
integral to CCNB's larger provincial mandate. The OA engages CCNB members
living in Fundy communities as appropriate in outreach activities,
encouraging them as volunteers.
The OA is a skilled communicator, both verbally and in writing, and a real
people person. The OA also has strong web-based skills, maximizing
opportunities via the internet to engage the public and build a network of
supporters. Web-based fundraising and merchandising are part of this.
Initially this is a 12-hour per week position with the potential to grow to
full time as resources permit. Per hour rate to be negotiated.
