[Sust-mar] Important information on fundraiser invitation

Hi all

In the interests of full disclosure, the fundraiser recently posted
(referenced below) is *not* for sending youth to a "peace conference" but to
the Gross National Happiness conference. If anyone you know is involved in
going or sending youth to this conference, please help them understand what
and who they are engaging and supporting.

Gross National Happiness is a concept "owned" and promoted by the Bhutan
government. But, particularly regarding children, Bhutan is signatory to
only two human rights instruments: the Convention on the Rights of the Child
(CRC) and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
(CEDAW). The government can therefore be held accountable to its citizens
under these two conventions. Monitoring under the Convention on the Rights
of the Child, in particular, has raised strong concerns about the violation
of the rights of children from the Lhotshampa community (southern Bhutanese
people of Nepali origin).

Enjoy the concert but please do not send our future leaders over there blind
and dumb, allowing the cynics in the Bhutan government to continue their GNH
propaganda while ignoring their human rights issues. Thanks!

Subject: [Sust-mar] Support Local Youth and join us for CONTRA DANCE

The Smokin' Contraband is hosting a dance Friday November 2nd, 8pm at
St George's Church Hall (the Round Church) access from Maitland St.
This dance is a fundraiser for a team of youth travelling to Thailand
for a peace conference.

Contra dancing requires no experience, the caller tells you what to
do. Wear soft soled, non-marking shoes, a good spinning skirt and
bring water. Come with or without a dancing partner.
