Greetings!
Please spread the word...
Emerald Web Co-ordinator Job Posting
Deadline for Applications: August 29, 4pm.
Emerald Web Project Coordinator: Ecology Action Centre (EAC)
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
The Ecology Action Centre is seeking an Emerald Web Project Coordinator.
This position is a 6-month internship, full-time (35h/week) supported by the
Canadian Community Economic Development Network (CCEDNet).
The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is a leading voice on environmental issues
in Nova Scotia. The EAC was founded in 1971 with the vision of creating a
society in Nova Scotia that respects and protects nature and provides
environmentally and economically sustainable solutions for its citizens. The
Ecology Action Centre¹s office is wheelchair accessible. EAC is an equal
opportunity employer.
The Project Coordinator's main focus will be coordinating and planning a new
project, entitled the Emerald Web. The project includes an inventory of
existing ecological businesses and initiatives in Nova Scotia; maps that
highlight these beneficial activities; and creation of a sense of community
and co-operation between communities and groups who are working to take care
of the earth. We hope to create a tool that highlights the local successes
rather than the usual focus on the province¹s economic problems. The
resulting knowledge could stimulate new faith in our green economy, and
foster learning about the importance of supporting sustainable, local
initiatives. This project would be an attempt to counteract the constant
battle that occurs, especially in rural areas, to protect our communities
from ecological threats.
The Emerald Web Project Coordinator will work collaboratively with and
report to the EAC's Food Action Committee (FAC) and Emerald Web Planning
Committee, as well as network with other organizations with similar goals.
In addition to working on this main project, the intern will also
participate in FAC meetings, EAC staff and planning meetings, fundraising,
and events for disseminating the information gathered for the Emerald Web
maps.
Highlights:
* Work in the EAC's eco-renovated office with 35 other dedicated staff
* Opportunity for flexibility, autonomy, and creativity
* Collaborate with and connect to ecological initiatives throughout Nova
Scotia
* Opportunity to help rural communities celebrate and build on businesses or
initiatives that are good for the Earth
Responsibilities include:
* Planning and consolidating the details of the Emerald Web
* Finding and tracking initiatives to be included on the map
* Creating education and outreach materials
* Generating media and public interest in the Emerald Web
* Strategic planning, networking, and fundraising
* Participating in and supporting the overall work of the Food Action
Committee and EAC
Skills and Experience:
* Community development or related degree with an ecological and/or
food-related focus
* Excellent research ability and strategic thinking skills
* Enjoys working with community groups and has experience with coalition
building and public engagement
* Ability to prioritize and work under deadlines
* Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
* Excellent written and oral communications skills
* Fundraising and proposal writing skills
* Passion for Nova Scotia's environment and environmental issues
The intern must be:
* Between the ages of 15 and 30 inclusively at the time of selection
* A Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected person within the
meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
* Legally entitled to work in Canada
* Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial and/or
territorial legislation and regulations
* Out-of-school
* A post-secondary college or university graduate
* Not receiving Employment Insurance benefits
* Can demonstrate a lack of labour market attachment to field of study
(under-employed or unemployed)
* Can demonstrate that working in the field of community economic
development is a career goal
* Has not previously participated in a Career Focus work experience
placement
Start/End Date: Sept 8th, 2008 to Feb 20th, 2009
Wage: $15/hour
35 hour work-week
Application: Cover letter, resume and three references by 4:00 pm, August
